The 42nd issue of The New CartoPhilatelist Journal will be sent to members in early July.  This twenty page issue is filled with many interesting articles, news about the Society and new issue images.

For the first article in issue 42, Vice-President David Wolfersberger continues his in-depth look at the map stamps of the French Southern Antarctic Territories, examining the beautiful map stamps depicting the Crozet and Kerguelen Archipelagos.   The stamps are highlighted by a number of detailed map images shown on maxi-card issues.  Next up is a notice from Society Member Stuart Hamilton of Australia who introduces us to a selection of associated cartophilatelic and cartonumismatic issues.  One recent issue from Australia commemorates the centenary of the foundation of Canberra. A very interesting connection between maps on stamps and maps on coins. If you know of more, please tell us! Next is a brief announcement about the major updates to the Society’s web site.  This is followed by a fascinating, comprehensive article on Gronchi Rosa Forgeries by Paolo Vaccari. The translated article is sure to become one of the most definitive sources in English regarding this unique and highly sought after issue.  We thank Paolo and VACCARI srl Filatelia for their support in the translation of this article.  Tim Olmstead provides details of the voting results of the “All Star” baseball themed poll from issue 41, along with a new poll for the the January issue. Be sure to send Tim your choices!  In the next article, European Representative Volker Woesner examines the unique theme of “Canals” on map stamps, with an interesting  selection of issues from the Kiel, Suez and Panama canals.  Incoming Society President Mark Honig describes some of the interesting maps to be found on the gutters of Falkland Island stamps, and also updates us with some Society News. A bio of Mark is also provided in this issue. Christina Stitt contacts the Society with some interesting map cancellations that she had in and exhibit. Thanks for sharing this information Christina! The final article in issue 42 is from Society Member Ap Koopman who examines that interesting feature known as the “Caprivi Strip” and its history and depiction on map stamps. A selection of new issue news and images complied by David rounds out this issue.

The 41st issue of The New CartoPhilatelist is slated to be dispatched to members in early April 2013. The issue beings twenty full pages of fascinating articles, images and information about the Society.

The first article in TNCP 41 is from the Society’s out-going president, David Wolfersberger and details the map stamps of the French Southern and Antarctic Territories. A number of special mini-sheets featuring maps are shown in the article. The next article is from member Pierre Moïse, entitled From Lisbon to Nagasaki: the “Portuguese Hemisphere.” This unique article examines Portuguese navigation, discovery and cultural influence in former colonies and countries as depicted through cartophilately. Next up, member Tim Olmstead proposes an interesting “baseball” themed poll to decide the top 9 map stamp designs from the USA. Remember to send your votes and comments to Tim!  President Emeritus Miklos Pinther introduces us to a number of cartographic map cancellations and similar postal history items. Next, President Mark Honig remembers Al Underberg in this special “Closed Album” piece. A number of society news items, results of the election of officers, new issue descriptions, and a wonderful bio of the David Wolfersberger rounds out this full issue. The 40th issue of The New CartoPhilatelist was dispatched to members in early January 2013. The issue opens the year with twenty full pages of fascinating articles, images and information about the Society.

TNCP 40 begins with an in-depth article by Society member Roger Kirby, about the connection of lighthouses and maps on stamps and examines, how over this years, this combination has been changing.  The next article is the final installment of member James Hamilton’s comprehensive series about Captain James Cook and CartoPhilately, and presents a myriad of cartophilatelic examples relating to Captain Cook’s Third Voyage.  Society member Pierre Moise provides some background and details about a 2012 issue by local Greenland artists depicting the islands of Denmark covered by thick glaciers, much like on the island of Greenland.  In the next article, European Representative Volker Woesner continues his series on survey related themes on map stamps, this time examining how mapping datums are shown.  Society President David Wolfersberger presents news about the society along with a detailed recap of the 5th Meeting of the CartoPhilatelic Society that took place in NYC in October 2012. There is a lot of information covered, and details about the forth-coming election of officers, so please be sure to check this carefully. Vice president Mark Honig tells us about series of interesting map images found in the gutters of a number of Caribbean issues marking the 21st birthday of Princess Diana.  At the auctions, by past president, Miklos Pinther, looks at some interesting results of recent auctions, including the  sale of Professor Litchfield’s collection, who passed away last year. Issue 40 is rounded out with a series of new issue images and updates to the Maps on Stamps checklist.
