The CartoPhilatelic Society is pleased to announce that Dr. Alf Jordan and Mr. Miklos Pinther have been named Lifetime Members of the Society in recognition of their long and meritorious service and contributions to the Society. Founded in 1955, the Society has a world-wide membership of collectors interested in maps on stamps. Dr. Jordan and Mr. Pinther are the first Society members to be so honored.

Dr. Jordan, a native of New York, NY, received a BA from Yale University; an MD from Case Western Reserve University; and an MA from the University of South Maine. He practiced in Sioux City, IA until retiring to Yarmouth, ME. While in Iowa, Mr. Jordan began collecting maps, a passion that continues to this day. Like many of us, he began collecting stamps early, in his case the result of inheriting a US collection from his grandmother before he was 10. His collecting remained dormant until a few years ago when he began collecting stamps on stamps. That interest led to his meeting Bill Critzer, the editor of the Stamps on Stamps Collectors Club journal, Signal.

Dr. Jordan had an ongoing interest in maps and the map stamps. He mentioned to Mr. Critzer that it was too bad the cartophilatelic group had become inactive. Mr. Critzer then challenged Dr. Jordan: “Well, why don’t you start it back up?” And he did. Under Dr. Jordan’s leadership former members, including former secretary/treasurer Lillian Kent who maintained the treasury, checklist, and membership list during the period of dormancy, were contacted; new officers recruited; and the Society became active again with the publication of the first issue of the Society’s quarterly journal, The New CartoPhilatelist, in March 2003.

Dr. Jordan served as President of the Society until 2004, then as Secretary/Treasurer until his “retirement” earlier this year. During his tenure as Secretary/Treasurer he was responsible for printing and distributing The New CartoPhilatelist. He is currently focusing his attention on United States maps related to the expansion of railroads throughout the west and the land grants provided as in incentive to build these. Dr. Jordan and his wife, Annie, have 4 children and 9 grandchildren. Dr. Jordan was the key in re-establishing the CartoPhilatelic Society.

Miklos Pinther immigrated to the United States from Hungary shortly after the failed 1956 revolution. He began his career as a cartographer at the American Geographical Society (“AGS”) while studying geography at Columbia University. He was appointed as Head of the Cartographic Department in 1969, a position he held until 1977. During this time he supervised the preparation of a number of excellent maps of Antarctica. This work was recognized by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1976 when an arc-shaped mountain ridge in Antarctica, 6 miles long, isolated and snow covered, was named the Pinther Ridge.

In 1978, Mr. Pinther joined the Cartographic Section of the United Nations, and was the Chief Cartographer for the UN from 1985 until his retirement in January 2001. Among the notable undertakings during his tenure were the demarcation of the Iraq-Kuwait boundary in 1993 and the establishment of the so-called Blue Line between Israel and Lebanon in 2000. He has traveled widely, visiting over 70 countries, including such far-away places as Mt. Everest and Antarctica.

It was Wilfrid Webster, a founder of The CartoPhilatelic Society (the Carto-Philatelists at the time) and a fellow colleague and mentor at AGS, who first introduced Mr. Pinther to collecting map stamps. At the urging from Mark Larkin, a former editor of The Carto-Philatelist, he held the position of President of the Society, and Publisher of The Carto-Philatelist, from 1986 to 1995, and since 2003 has been President Emeritus. He also edited the Society’s successful book, America on the Map (2007), the first of a planned series of occasional publications, and is in the midst of editing the second volume of this series. He is also a frequent contributor to The New CartoPhilatelist.

Mr. Pinther is a member of a number of other philatelic organizations including the German cartophilatelic society, Landkarten-Vermessung-Entdeckungsgeschichte der Erde, and The Collectors Club in New York where he served for several years on the Board of Governors. His cartophilatelic interests range widely from essays and proofs to mint stamps, to map stamps on covers, and even to poster stamps. Recently he has been spending most of his hobby time hunting for pre-2000 material to fill the many gaps in his collection. Mr. Pinther is currently assembling an exhibit which will be used to publicize cartophilately to traditional collectors.

The CartoPhilatelic Society is an affiliate of the American Philatelic Society and the American Topical Association. The New CartoPhilatelist is published quarterly for members; each issue contains many articles of interest to those who collect maps on stamps. An extensive Maps on Stamps Checklist is also available to members. Information about the Society can be found at www.mapsonstamps.com, or by contacting the Secretary, Marybeth Sulkowski, Unit 209, 1117 Douglas Avenue, North Providence, RI 02904.

Martin Oakes, Silver Medal, ATA-NTSS 2011-06

Martin Oakes, Silver Medal, ATA-NTSS 2011-06

A new exhibit by Society journal editor Martin Oakes, entitled “Have You Read a Map Lately?” received a Silver Medal at the National Topical Stamp Show (NTSS) held in Milwaukee, WI, USA in late June 2011. The NTSS is the large annual meeting of the American Topical Association (ATA) and featured many exhibits and dealers. Martin’s exhibit also received the Women Exhibitors Medal given to the exhibit that has the highest potential to develop into a gold medal winner. Martin’s exhibit contained 160 pages spread across 10 frames. The comprehensive exhibit covered the entire range of maps on stamps from latitude and longitude to map projections to maps featuring explorers and exploration. Martin will make some scans of his exhibit and a link will be available in the near future.
[ Congratulations Martin! Next time we hear about this, you will have won a gold medal! This is also a good opportunity to encourage other members who may have exhibited in the past and would like to show scans of their exhibits online. The Society can provide online storage for scans of the exhibit. Please contact Martin or the web admin if you are interested in showing an exhibit on the Society’s web site. –web admin ]

Estonia: Lighthouse and Map Series New Issue

Estonia 2011-06-02

Estonia 2011-06-02

On June 2, 2011, Estonian Post released another in the series of lighthouse and map stamps. The single €0.35 denomination stamp depicts the Vergi Lighthouse as situated on the Northern coast of Estonia and the Gulf of Finland. Some information from the Estonian Post web site provides the following description. In the late 19th and early 20th century Vergi was one of the largest fishing villages on the North Estonian coast. In the 1920s the Port of Vergi served as a wintering harbour for small ships in addition to the local shipbuilding industry. In 1924 an automatic light beacon attached to an iron lattice frame was put up on a large coastal reef adjoining the port. Similar beacons were erected on several other Estonian islands, such as Prangli and Muhu. In 1936 a reinforced concrete lighthouse ten meters high replaced the rusted iron beacon. During World War II there was no light in the Vergi lighthouse, however in 1945 the light was restarted. The Vergi Lighthouse is 75 years old in 2011 and is a white concrete tower with lantern room and balcony, 10 meters high from its base and the visibility of the light is about 14 kilometers. The previous issue in this series was the Suurupi Leading Light Lighthouses single, issued on April 22, 2010.

Montenegro 2011-04-21

Montenegro Post has issued what appears to be two stamps in their 2011 Europa issue that depict maps. The 2011 Europa issue commemorates the UN’s International Year of the Forest. The map in each issue shows the the European countries (Europa issuing countries?) cut from a leaf. One issue contains two 0.90€ stamps in portrait orientation in a souvenir sheet. The first stamp shows the “EU” emblem formed out of leaves, with the second stamp shows the European countries, using the leaf cut-out described above, both on a green background. The second issue, also a 0.90€ denomination, depicts the European countries leaf cut-out map on a white background. (it has been difficult to find images of these stamps, better scans are welcomed. — web-admin)

Bermuda Map Stamp Features Antique Chart

Bermuda 2011-05-19

Bermuda 2011-05-19

On May 19, 2011 Bermuda Post issued a four stamp set commemorating the local nautical pilots. The Bermuda Post website describes the issue saying: “The graveyard of shipwrecks surrounding Bermuda is testament to the island’s treacherous encircling reefs and complicated channel systems. Local knowledge, navigation charts, lighthouses, signaling stations, beacons and buoys have aided in the safe passage of incoming and outgoing ships, but the experience of local pilots has been of paramount importance. Pilots are local coastal navigators who guide ships through the difficult approaches to Bermuda.” One map stamp is present in this set. The 0.35c denomination depicts a piloting crew bring their boat ashore in the top section of the stamp, along with an image of Heathers Chart in the bottom section. (the image shown here is of a promotional design and may not depict the actual issued stamp. an additional scan of the stamp is welcome. –web admin.)

Cyprus Lighthouse Issue with Small Maps

On May 4, 2011, Cyprus Post issued a set of two stamps and one souvenir sheet depicting lighthouses on the island. Each stamp and the souvenir sheet have small locator maps showing the position of the lighthouse along the coast. The Society’s vice-president, Mr. Mark Honig estimates that there are about 100 lighthouse/map stamps and that the combination is rather popular. (perhaps there is an article in there somewhere for TNCP. any lighthouse / map collectors please step forward! –web admin)
