 Queen Elizabeth Land, 2013-02 Announcement, status unknown New issue sleuth Mark Honig has alerted us to this supposed Feb 2013 issue from British Antarctic Territory marking the appellation of “Queen Elizabeth Land” last December 18th, 2012 by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. This rough image depicts on the right of the sheet, a map of the newly named territory with a photo image of HM Queen Elizabeth II on the left. The sheet honors the Queen in her Diamond Jubilee Year. We are uncertain of the status of this sheet. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has indicated that the name “Queen Elizabeth Land” will be used in future on all British maps, however due to the unique status of Antarctica, as stated in the Antarctic Treaty, it will be up to other countries to recognize the name if they so choose. The election of officers for the CartoPhilatelic Society for the period of April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2016 has been completed and the results have been approved by the current officers.
These members have been elected to the following positions:

- Representative at Large: Mr. Philip Coop (USA)
In addition to the elected officers, Mr. Martin Oakes will continue as Editor of The New CartoPhilatelist Journal and Mr. Reese Plews will continue as Society web administrator.

The 41st issue of The New CartoPhilatelist is slated to be dispatched to members in early April 2013. The issue beings twenty full pages of fascinating articles, images and information about the Society.
The first article in TNCP 41 is from the Society’s out-going president, David Wolfersberger and details the map stamps of the French Southern and Antarctic Territories. A number of special mini-sheets featuring maps are shown in the article. The next article is from member Pierre Moïse, entitled From Lisbon to Nagasaki: the “Portuguese Hemisphere.” This unique article examines Portuguese navigation, discovery and cultural influence in former colonies and countries as depicted through cartophilately. Next up, member Tim Olmstead proposes an interesting “baseball” themed poll to decide the top 9 map stamp designs from the USA. Remember to send your votes and comments to Tim! President Emeritus Miklos Pinther introduces us to a number of cartographic map cancellations and similar postal history items. Next, President Mark Honig remembers Al Underberg in this special “Closed Album” piece. A number of society news items, results of the election of officers, new issue descriptions, and a wonderful bio of the David Wolfersberger rounds out this full issue. The theme for the PostEurop’s 20th anniversary of Europa issues is “Vehicles of the Mail Carriers.” This year’s Europa issue from Sweden Post features an aerial image depicting a mail carrier’s route overlaid on the image. The March 14, 2013 issued 24.00 KR mini-sheet consists of two 12.00 KR stamps, one vertical stamp showing a mail carrier riding a bicycle and one horizontal stamp of a mail carrier and electric van. In the background a monochrome image which appears to be an aerial photo or high-resolution satellite image of an urban area is shown overlaid with yellow lines depicting the route of a mail carrier.

 Closed Album: Al Underberg 2013-01 On January 30th I received a phone call from Marilyn Underberg that her husband, Al had passed away that morning after a brief illness.
Al Underberg was a member of our society from 1988 and served our society as Vice President between 2004 and 2010. Al had a huge stamp collection, besides map stamps he collected stamps of places he visited and collected stamps of countries he visited on his travels. He told me that traveling was actually his biggest hobby, before (map) stamp collecting.
Al and Marilyn were members of the Travelers Century Club and have visited 167 countries. In his office in St. Peters-burg where he worked as an attorney, he had a world map with pins indicating all the places he had visited.
His recent focus was on scientific re-search in philately and founded the Institute for Analytical Philately. He was Vice President of the St. Petersburg Stamp Club.
Al is survived by his wife Marilyn, his four daughters and sons-in law and nine grandchildren. I will always remember his hospitality and generosity when we met and during my stays at their home in St. Petersburg, FL.
All members of the CPS thank Al for his service to the Society and express our condolences to Marilyn and his family.

Just a quick, but important reminder for Journal submission dates. Our Editor, Martin Oakes, has chosen the following date as the deadline for article submissions to the Journal:
TNCP #41, April 2013, submission deadline: March 10, 2013
If you are interested in submitting an article please contact our Editor, Martin Oakes as soon as possible.
 The “TNCP Style Sheet – Instructions to Authors” has been updated, so please download a revised copy before starting to author an article.
Remember there are many options for Journal content and Martin will be happy to discuss them with you. The list three issues of the Journal have been 20 pages. This is due to the wonderful amount of content that members have been submitting. The added pages will continue, as long as there is sufficient material available. Remember if you have feedback, please be sure to share with Martin or use the general Society contact form.
Issues 34 & 35 contained a translated article that was first published in French, in another philatelic journal. As the Society is international in scope, we have various members that can sometimes volunteer translation resources. For those of you that have non-english articles and would like to see them translated and published in The New CartoPhilatelist please contact our Editor Martin Oakes.
